It's made from cotton that has already been used in hospitals. They take all the dirty, blood and pus filled cotton, wash it, bleach it and use it to make ear buds. So, unless you want
to become the first person in the world to get Herpes Zoster Oticus (a viral infection of the inner, middle, and external ear) of the ear and that too from a cotton bud, DON'T BUY THEM! Please forward to all this may be helpful for someone..... .......
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" ಕೇಳಿಕೊ೦ಡ ಮಿತ್ರರೊಬ್ಬರು ವಿಬಿನ್ನವಾದ ಸಲಯೆಯಿತ್ತರು.
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" ಸ್ಥಬ್ದವಾಗಿತ್ತು. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" ನೋಡು ನೋಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಬಾಯಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರು ಬರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" ಹೊತ್ತು ಈ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನ ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಕುಸಿದು ಕುಳಿತೆವು!!!. Marsily is a professor at the University of Paris and French Academy of Sciences. He specializes in hydro-geology and has done extensive research on water issues related to climate change. Excerpts:

What impact could climate change in India have on water?

The impact of climate change in terms of temperature is well predicted for India and the world by the Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change, but the hydrological impact is very uncertain. The good thing is there shouldn't be a major decrease in rainfall in India post-2050. In fact, rainfall will increase to a considerable level in all parts of India. In N-E, there can be a decrease in rainfall. However, India is vulnerable to water shortage - it has to conserve water efficiently.

Issues with water conservation?

Water conservation is directly linked to food and eating habits. Every person uses many litres of water every day depending on what and how he eats. A vegetarian saves a lot of water because water is not wasted on feeding and rearing animals. Indians are doing well because a good number of them are vegetarians. The West consumes a lot of meat and it is going to hit them hard one day.

Demography is also an important factor. The way population is increasing in some countries, including India, consumption is exploding. There is no water for so many people. India is self-sufficient in terms of water currently unlike Saudi Arabia and Tunisia who are already facing a 30% water shortage. But by 2050 if India is not efficient enough in conserving water, it has to switch to importing food from other countries. Many countries are already importing food like meat. Another important factor is degradation in soil quality. Issues like soil salination will leave us with acute food shortage. Also, there is very less agricultural land left in most countries contributing to food and water shortage.

What measures do you suggest?

We should limit birth rate. Having more than three children is irresponsible behaviour. There is no food to feed so many. We should never throw food away. I find Indians to be very respectful towards food. They try not to waste food. In many countries including the West food is thrown away and is part of garbage sometimes. Throwing away food is criminal considering the shortage we are already facing.

Source:- TOI Dated 13-10-2008

49 mammal species under threat

49 mammal species under threat
New Delhi, PTI:

Over 49 mammal species in India including tigers, gibbons, deer and bats are facing grave levels of extinction threat, resulting from habitat destruction, pollution and poaching, the latest assessment by International Union of Conservation of Nature revealed.

According to the new data, over 124 Indian mammal species are facing different degrees of extinction of which 10 are critically endangered, 39 are endangered, 48 are vulnerable and 27 are showing sharp decline in population.
“This is the first exhaustive assessment of mammals which includes all the species found in the country.

Prominent mammals include several species of primates, especially the many langur species earlier thought to be one single species is now 7 species,” said Sanjay Molur, who contributed Indian data for the listing process.
Most of the threatened land mammals are concentrated in the eco-sensitive zones of Western ghats, North-eastern states and Andaman. About 17 of the total 49 species listed as critically endangered are from North-eastern India and 16 are found in Western Ghats.

“Western Ghats are facing extreme pressure of human activities hence increasing the threat on the species found here. After the killing of Veerappan, police became relaxed giving a free hand to poachers who are still active in the area,” said Tito Joseph, Program Manager Wild Life Protection Society of India.

The enlisted mammals range from flagship species like Tiger, Asian Elephant and Rhinos to lesser known ones like Dhole, mouse, hares and bats.

“Small mammals which do not get much attention in conservation efforts are an important part of the food chain and are necessary for maintaining ecological balance,” said Ramesh Pandey, Deputy Director, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.

Be with nature.....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_y73auezXe9E/SOsfldfqjKI/AAAAAAAACnw/lWhq0mO-Lic/s320/DSC03017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254328118690876578" />

Feeling blue? Last year, when the same region was reeling under what was said to be the worst floods in living history, we simply did not know. Media had flashed a few images, but it was more of the same: rivers flood this region every year, so what’s new? What’s there to say?

This year there are some differences: first, the breach in the Kosi’s protection system of embankments and barrages took place in Nepal, not in India. As maintenance of the embankments was our responsibility, we could not blame Nepal for the floods. We had to look within.

Second, the area, drowned under the flood, was massive and millions were marooned in remote villages. This was partly because this time the river breached upstream of the Kosi barrage and spilled over the land, forgetting that it even had a course to run before it flowed into the Ganga. Remember, this is a river, which has changed its course by 120 km in the past 250 years—satellite images show 12 distinct channels of how the river has moved.

Third, and most important, the flood captured our attention, because of the scale of the human tragedy. It was made clear that in spite of all our big talk and even bigger institutions for disaster management, we remain unprepared, under-staffed and unequipped for a crisis, when it hits. Even as people waited to be rescued we had few boats to bring them to safe places; we had little food, water and shelter to provide for them in the relief camps; and worse, we had no authority to ensure that empty homes would not be ransacked. As a result, people refused to leave. They preferred the swirling water to relief camps. What an indictment of our efforts.

Now the waters are finally receding and before our attention also moves on, let us learn, for once, the hard message of the Kosi floods of 2008. Let us learn because this disaster may not be the first or the last but it tells us of a situation getting out of control. It tells us that we have done so much wrong in the way we have managed our environment. It tells us that we know so little about how climate change and its manifestation of changing intensities of rainfall will exacerbate floods in the future. It also tells that we cannot ‘adapt’ to these changes, unless we do things differently.

Let’s unpack this lesson. For long, we have believed that we can ‘conquer’ nature, control the flood and emasculate our rivers. In Kosi and its tributaries, we worked this engineering to perfection, by building barrages to hold the river, accompanied with miles of embankments to tie the river down.

It was as far back as 1991, that environmentalist Anil Agarwal published the book, Floods, flood plains and environmental myths. He explained how the engineering solution was in fact increasing both the incidence and intensity of floods. The reason was simple. The rivers brought down huge quantities of silt each year. The Kosi, in particular, was known to bring coarse sediments, which would add to the rate of siltation. Wherever embankments were built, silt got deposited in the river. We forgot that the extraordinary fertility of this region was because of this same alluvial silt, which was spread over the land by the inundating waters. With silt in its bed, the flow was reduced and floods increased. When the embankments broke or breached, flood duration increased because the water could not drain away. Worse, the engineering walls led people to believe that they were protected from floods. As a result, low lying areas got populated. Then when the wall broke, the flood hit hard.

In doing all this, explained Anil Agarwal, we messed up the drainage system of the region. We merrily filled up the water bodies, which were the sponges for its floodwater and forgot the ‘dead’ channels of the river, through which the water gushed away. We believed these were unnecessary. We forgot how the wetlands provided food in the flood season—from fish to plant biodiversity. We forgot because first, we were hungry for land. Then, we were greedy for the money we would make from these engineering marvels, which were repaired on paper and half built, for full money. Corruption became the way of life. In all this, we forgot that we had once learnt to ‘live’ with floods.

But when he wrote this, Anil Agarwal was pilloried and mocked; the environmental lobby even accused him of playing into the timber contractor’s hand. All because he said that we should stop blaming the mountains for the floods in the plains. It was time we understood that the forests of the Himalayas were needed for the people who lived there. But the forests in this fragile and extremely young and erosion-prone region would not stop the floods in the plains. To ‘stop’ the floods, we had to re-learn the science and art of water management. The water engineers rubbished this saying they knew better. They had the answers. All I can say, we wish they were right.

We have to now understand that we are faced with a double whammy—floods will increase also because the pattern of rainfall is going on a twist. Climate change is making rain more unseasonal, erratic and intense in many parts of the country. ‘Coping’ with floods will become even more difficult now.

So what we can do without is the deadly combination of arrogance and ignorance. Instead, we can do with some learning. And a lot of doing.

Source:- CSE

134 bird species wiped out in 3 centuries

<img style="display:block; the group said in a report, adding that it is highly possible three species have already been lost this century.

Currently, 1,226 species or 12.4 per cent of the total including species native to Japan such as Blakiston's fish owl and the Amami woodcock face extinction, it said.

Three human factors -- agriculture, logging and human-induced invasive species -- are the most threat facing bird species, respectively affecting 1,065, 668 and 625 species, the report said.

These stresses are threatening many of the familiar bird species in parts of the world such as the little tern in Japan, the cuckoo and eastern turtle dove in Europe and the vulture in India, while water birds such as the red knot are showing widespread declines particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, it said.

The report also highlights that a disproportionately high number of threatened birds live on islands, particularly oceanic islands far from land, because these species are often susceptible to the impact of introduced predators due to isolation for thousands of years.

The four extinct species in Japan including the Bonin grosbeak and Ryukyu wood pigeon lived on the Ogasawara Islands and the Nansei Islands, it said.

Over the past 20 years, 225 bird species have been moved to a higher category of threat because of genuine changes in status whereas just 32 species have been moved down to a lower danger category.

Food crisis likely in 5 yrs: Expert

<img style="display:block; The Central Bio-diversity Department, the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organisation had prepared guidelines for documentation of traditional knowledge of biodiversity, he said.

Already people are struggling to have 2 meals a day...So will this be big crisis for india in coming days?

India's National Action Plan on Climate Change

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_y73auezXe9E/SM4rWWQC3nI/AAAAAAAACg0/e1A1JP4Ld9c/s320/air_pollution.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246178278863199858" />

On June 30, 2008, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released India's first
National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) outlining existing and
future policies and programs addressing climate mitigation and
adaptation. The plan identifies eight core "national missions"
running through 2017 and directs ministries to submit detailed
implementation plans to the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change
by December 2008.

Emphasizing the overriding priority of maintaining high economic
growth rates to raise living standards, the plan "identifies measures
that promote our development objectives while also yielding
co-benefits for addressing climate change effectively. " It says these
national measures would be more successful with assistance from
developed countries, and pledges that India's per capita greenhouse
gas emissions "will at no point exceed that of developed countries
even as we pursue our development objectives."

National Missions

National Solar Mission: The NAPCC aims to promote the development and
use of solar energy for power generation and other uses with the
ultimate objective of making solar competitive with fossil-based
energy options. The plan includes:

* Specific goals for increasing use of solar thermal technologies
in urban areas, industry, and commercial establishments;

* A goal of increasing production of photovoltaics to 1000
MW/year; and

* A goal of deploying at least 1000 MW of solar thermal power
generation.

Other objectives include the establishment of a solar research
center, increased international collaboration on technology
development, strengthening of domestic manufacturing capacity, and
increased government funding and international support.

National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Current initiatives
are expected to yield savings of 10,000 MW by 2012. Building on the
Energy Conservation Act 2001, the plan recommends:

* Mandating specific energy consumption decreases in large
energy-consuming industries, with a system for companies to trade
energy-savings certificates;

* Energy incentives, including reduced taxes on energy-efficient
appliances; and

* Financing for public-private partnerships to reduce energy
consumption through demand-side management programs in the municipal,
buildings and agricultural sectors.

National Mission on Sustainable Habitat: To promote energy efficiency
as a core component of urban planning, the plan calls for:

* Extending the existing Energy Conservation Building Code;

* A greater emphasis on urban waste management and recycling,
including power production from waste;

* Strengthening the enforcement of automotive fuel economy
standards and using pricing measures to encourage the purchase of
efficient vehicles; and

* Incentives for the use of public transportation.

National Water Mission: With water scarcity projected to worsen as a
result of climate change, the plan sets a goal of a 20% improvement in
water use efficiency through pricing and other measures.

National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem: The plan aims
to conserve biodiversity, forest cover, and other ecological values in
the Himalayan region, where glaciers that are a major source of
India's water supply are projected to recede as a result of global
warming.

National Mission for a "Green India": Goals include the afforestation
of 6 million hectares of degraded forest lands and expanding forest
cover from 23% to 33% of India's territory.

National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture: The plan aims to support
climate adaptation in agriculture through the development of
climate-resilient crops, expansion of weather insurance mechanisms,
and agricultural practices.

National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change: To gain a
better understanding of climate science, impacts and challenges, the
plan envisions a new Climate Science Research Fund, improved climate
modeling, and increased international collaboration. It also
encourage private sector initiatives to develop adaptation and
mitigation technologies through venture capital funds.

Other Programs

The NAPCC also describes other ongoing initiatives, including:

* Power Generation: The government is mandating the retirement of
inefficient coal-fired power plants and supporting the research and
development of IGCC and supercritical technologies.

* Renewable Energy: Under the Electricity Act 2003 and the
National Tariff Policy 2006, the central and the state electricity
regulatory commissions must purchase a certain percentage of
grid-based power from renewable sources.

* Energy Efficiency: Under the Energy Conservation Act 2001, large
energy-consuming industries are required to undertake energy audits
and an energy labeling program for appliances has been introduced.

Implementation

Ministries with lead responsibility for each of the missions are
directed to develop objectives, implementation strategies, timelines,
and monitoring and evaluation criteria, to be submitted to the Prime
Minister's Council on Climate Change. The Council will also be
responsible for periodically reviewing and reporting on each mission's
progress. To be able to quantify progress, appropriate indicators and
methodologies will be developed to assess both avoided emissions and
adaptation benefits.

As reported on www.pewclimate. org

Does global warming increase the amount of mosquitoes?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_y73auezXe9E/SMoH23bYFII/AAAAAAAACgQ/IIYuFKrkYG8/s320/Mosquito.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245013355199468674" />

The incidence of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya is rising in India due to climate change. These diseases are no longer restricted to old areas. They are spreading, as mosquitoes are now able to live and breed in new areas.

There is now evidence of rising temperature, change of rainfall (either high or low and its timing) and humidity in the country. Studies have found that while intensified rainfall favours mosquito breeding, rising temperature along with humidity increases its survival period during the adult phase and hence the disease transmission capacity of each mosquito magnifies several times.

There are reports of a rising number of vector-borne diseases in traditionally low endemic areas, such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

People living in these states are not as immune to malaria as inhabitants of traditionally endemic states. Therefore, the fatality rate in newer areas is likely to be much higher.

But unfortunately due to poor record keeping and insufficient data it is very difficult to develop robust linkage between climate change and vector-borne disease.

There is a need to strengthen the health service to improve diagnostic and treatment facilities and proper mosquito control measures in order to reduce the number of cases and fatalities. Policymakers need early warning systems in the public health domain to predict any form of epidemics.

That may be one of the areas to look at on World Health Day on Monday, which the World Health Organisation is observing this year on the theme 'protect health from climate change'.

The ecology, development, behaviour and survival of mosquitoes and the transmission dynamics of the diseases they spread are strongly influenced by climatic factors. Temperature, rainfall, and humidity are especially important, but others, such as wind and the duration of daylight, can also be significant.

Change of climate is essentially creating a more conducive environment where the disease causing vectors and microbes can grow faster and survive longer. Eventually, that intensifies the infection and prolongs its duration.

Mosquitoes in particular are highly sensitive to temperature. The mosquitoes that can carry malaria (Anopheline) generally do not develop or breed below about 16 degrees Celsius and the variety that transmits dengue fever (Aedes aegypti) is limited by winter temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

With sufficient moisture, warmer temperatures will generally cause an increase in mosquito abundance, biting rates and activity level and will accelerate the incubation of the parasites and viruses within them. The maturation of the malaria parasite becomes faster in higher temperature.

Therefore, temperature rise will intensify the infection spread from mosquito to people. Higher temperatures increase the number of blood meals taken and the number of times eggs are laid by the mosquitoes.

Relative humidity also affects malaria transmission, for instance, if the average monthly relative humidity is below 60 percent, it is believed that the life of the mosquito is so shortened that there is no malaria transmission.

Apart from vector-borne diseases, other infectious diseases also rise due to abnormal climate variation. A study conducted in Bangladesh has shown increase in the number of diarrhoea cases following both high or low rainfall and rise in temperature. Though there is no similar study in India yet, the effects are likely to be similar.

Global climate change due to human action is now a scientifically proven fact and a developing country like India would bear the brunt of all possible outcomes. However, despite being the most serious consequence, health has received inadequate attention in the larger policy dimension.

Will going vegetarian help save the world?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_y73auezXe9E/SMnrgH8YFNI/AAAAAAAACgI/_A1KidGI9OM/s320/mother-cow-and-calf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244982178170279122" />

R K Pachauri, chief of the Nobel prize winning UN climate change panel, has spiced up the debate on kebabs and steaks by suggesting that the best and easiest way of stemming climate change is to not eat meat at least one day each week. What's eating meat got to do with climate change, you may ask. A lot, actually.

The FAO calculates that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions arise not because you eat and belch or fart but in the way land is cleared, and feed for animals is grown. And also how the livestock emit methane, when it belches or farts, which is 23 times stronger as a climate-changing agent than carbon dioxide.

So, Pachauri's suggestion that the world should be biting into meat a little less seems a good idea. But the world is not a monolith. As in emissions, for which the rich countries are much more responsible than the poor ones, so with meat. Some eat it; others gobble it.

A citizen of UAE eats nearly 100 kg of poultry products per person annually. India might be famous for its tandoori chicken, but an average Indian just eats 2.1 kg of poultry products per person per year according to the US Department of Agriculture. And an average American chews upon 46 kg of chicken in a year and a Chinese 8.7 kg.
The story is the same for beef. An average Indian consumes 1.6 kg of beef and buff products while an average American eats 41.7 kg every year and a Brazilian 37.6 kg.

The high consumption of meat in the western world is driven by an intensive industry that ensures the meat is on the table of the rich, sometimes moving it across continents to suit changing tastes, preferences and fashion. Lands that used to grow other staple foods have been diverted to grow the stock that helps feed a population thirsting for meat.

In developing countries like India, the story is a bit different. The poultry trade is organized but still run primarily as a cooperative system for small farmers. Livestock feeds on agricultural residue more than special feed. The energy intensity of the tandoori chicken, so to say, is much less, though the spices in the dish may be too much for a European palate.

So, when Pachauri says chew a bit less on that bone, he is talking largely to a Western audience. But he is also holding out a warning for India— we can’t afford to go the western way and like many Indians who go vegeterian every Tuesday, it would be good if all Indian did once a week.

As head of the inter-governmental panel on climate change Pachauri has recommended that the world needs to take drastic action so that global average temperatures are to be maintained at just 2 degrees over the current. That demands a huge cut of emissions from the rich countries that have caused more than 70% of the GHG gas emissions.

Go vegetarian.=====> To produce a kilogram of beef, it takes, on average, 10 kg of grain and 680 litres of water.

Two cases of being powerfull and powerlessness....

Jambudwip is a tiny dot in the Bay of Bengal. A few years ago, it hit headlines when wildlife activists dragged fishermen, who used the landmass to dry their fish, to the Supreme Court. A case was filed regarding ‘encroachment’ of this island, partly covered by mangroves. The apex court’s central empowered committee (CEC), which advises it in all forest matters, got into the act. Its report to the court was clear: fish drying was a non-forest activity, so disallowed under the Forest Conservation Act (1980).

The fishermen appealed. They had to go out into the open sea for days, putting life on hold and everything they had at risk. Jambudwip was a convenient transit camp; they used this nearest landmass, with a natural harbour, only to dry fish. They had no fancy refrigeration; this was the only way they could preserve fish for sale in the mainland. Their practices were sustainable—fishing nets were handcrafted to catch only the adult fish, leaving the small to the sea. They used the sun to dry fish. They took from nature only what they needed.

I happened to be in court that day, when the lawyer for the fishermen strained to explain this use was not destructive, and, in fact, it was in the best interest of the fishermen to protect the mangroves as buffer to the harsh sea. The permits and payments made to the forest department showed the island was in use from 1950. Destruction to the mangroves was marginal—satellite imagery confirmed the island had, over these long years of use, lost only 200 ha of forest, out of its 2,000 ha.

The fishermen also put forward a plan—use the money we pay for permits to the forest department to plant mangroves; create a sustainable management plan for the island; restrict boat numbers. Sensible solutions. But “No,” said the CEC. The court concurred. Off with their heads. In one stroke, the livelihood of over 10,000 people engaged in fishing, drying, transporting and selling fish ended. 10,000 lost to penury.

Was it a victory for conservation? Cut now to another ‘forest case’. Same court, same committee. This time, though, the matter concerned a very powerful industrial house—Sterlite Industries, the subsidiary of London-based Vedanta plc—which wanted some 700 ha of rich, much more bio-diverse and valuable forest, for its bauxite mine. This time, the decision was different. Court and committee agreed to a compromise. The company could get the forest, but would have to pay for the value of the forest to be destroyed—Rs 55 crore, paltry when you think of the wildlife and the priceless watershed value of this forest, which feeds two rivers and countless streams of the region. It would also have to pay another Rs 50 crore for a wildlife management plan. And of course, it would only do ‘sustainable’ mining. No questions were asked on how ripping the top of a hill and dumping three tonnes of waste for every tonne of bauxite mined, in a high rainfall area, could be sustainable.

In this case, the apex court was possibly conscious that it could not hold up ‘development’, and opted for a middle path. So let us move back in time. Same committee, same court. Some years ago, the same committee had decided that no non-forest activity would be allowed in any national park or sanctuary, not even removing dead or decaying trees, grasses or drift wood. In the little unknown sanctuary of Kumbalgarh, in Rajasthan, this order was a death-knell for camels, which used the area, for three monsoon months, to graze. No appeal worked. Conservation science itself proved grazing benefited the sanctuary in these months. But “No”, said the committee. “No”, said the court.

Now back to the present. Same committee. Same court. The matter is of diamond mining in the core area of the Panna national park, where tigers breed. Once again, the committee turned kinder, gentler. The court, too, became considerate. The decision: mining to continue in the protected reserve; company to pay some 5 per cent of its capital cost and the net present value of the forests it would destroy. No deadline has been given for closure of the mine. There is another, cruel, twist. The same conservationist who filed the case against the mangrove-destroying fishermen of Jambudwip is now in charge of ensuring ‘sustainable’ mining in this protected reserve, where even dead trees cannot be removed.

These cases are not just about power and powerlessness. They are about our understanding of what works for conservation and what is good for development. It is clear we cannot comprehend why livelihoods of the poor are important. In our view, these are both destructive of the environment and dispensible. So, we value the ‘employment’ (meagre by any standards) modern industry will provide, but dismiss the employment, much larger in numbers of livelihoods of people.

We also believe modern industry, which by its very nature is extractive and destructive of resources, can be made sustainable. But we cannot believe the economies of the poor, which do not have such huge footprints to begin with, can be managed for sustainability. It is either our contempt for their practices or for the people, or both. In this way, increasingly, conservation becomes a mere money game. If you can pay, you can cut the forest, destroy the wildlife. No forest is so priceless it cannot be cut, or land so inviolate it cannot be had. Not by the poor, because they cannot pay and in any case their use is destructive and valueless. But by the rich.

Whatever happened to the principle that justice must compel the strong to refrain from doing what they have the power to do, so that the weak don’t have to accept what they are forced to accept? Whatever happened to our quality of mercy?

Courtesy:- Ms. Sunita Narian of CSE
